Kojic Acid vs Glutathione vs Alpha Arbutin: Which Brightening Ingredient Is Right for Your Skin?
Novelax PharmaRead the back of any brightening cream sold in Pakistan and you'll find some combination of three names: Kojic Acid, Glutathione, Alpha Arbutin. Sometimes one, sometimes all three, sometimes with numbers next to them. And every week someone asks us the same reasonable question: which one is actually the best?
The honest answer is "it depends what's wrong with your skin" — but that's not very useful on its own, so here's the full version. What each one does, where each one is strong, where each one falls short, and how to pick.
How they all work (the one-paragraph version)
Every dark spot, tan and patch of uneven tone on your face is melanin, made by an enzyme called tyrosinase in response to sun, inflammation or hormones. All three ingredients interfere with that process — but at slightly different points and with different strength, speed and gentleness. That's why they're not interchangeable, and it's why the best formulas use more than one.
Kojic Acid
What it is: a by-product of fermenting rice (the same process that makes sake). It's been used in Japanese skincare for decades.
How it works: it grabs the copper that tyrosinase needs to function. No copper, no working enzyme, less pigment.
Where it's strong: stubborn, defined dark spots and melasma. On its own it's one of the more potent over-the-counter lighteners.
Where it falls short: it's the most irritating of the three. At higher strengths it causes redness, stinging and — on medium to deep skin — that irritation can trigger new pigmentation, which is the opposite of the point. It also breaks down in light and air, so pure kojic creams lose strength fast once opened.
How we use it: in a stable form (Kojic Acid Dipalmitate) at a low level inside Skin Xam Fairness Cream, alongside gentler actives that do most of the work. Effective, without the irritation of a high-strength kojic product.
Best for: someone with specific dark spots, resilient (non-sensitive) skin, and patience to use it consistently at night.
Glutathione
What it is: an antioxidant your own body makes. In skincare it's applied topically; you may also have seen it sold as tablets and injections — we've written about why we don't recommend those in Glutathione Cream in Pakistan.
How it works: two ways. It reduces tyrosinase activity, and it nudges pigment production toward pheomelanin — the lighter type — instead of the darker eumelanin. Plus it's an antioxidant, so it protects against the pollution and UV stress that trigger pigment in the first place.
Where it's strong: overall tone. Dullness, general tan, "my whole face looks two shades darker than it should". It's the gentlest of the three — fine for daily use on sensitive skin, no stinging.
Where it falls short: it's slow, and it's not the best choice for a single stubborn spot. It brightens the whole canvas rather than erasing one mark.
How we use it: in Skin Xam Fairness Cream, MEDIX Skin Brightening Cream, Fender Face Wash and even Neoliva SPF 60 — because a little glutathione in every step adds up.
Best for: tan, dullness, uneven tone, sensitive skin, anyone who wants brightening without any risk of irritation.
Alpha Arbutin
What it is: a molecule from the bearberry plant, chemically related to hydroquinone (the prescription lightener) but without hydroquinone's side effects.
How it works: it blocks tyrosinase directly and steadily. It doesn't irritate like kojic, and it's more targeted than glutathione.
Where it's strong: post-acne marks, sun spots, defined patches — the pigment you can point to. It's the best balance of "actually works on spots" and "safe on brown skin" that you can buy without a prescription, which is why dermatologists here recommend it so often.
Where it falls short: it's still a 6–8 week ingredient (all of them are), and it does nothing for texture — pitted or raised scars need a procedure, not arbutin. It also needs sunscreen or the sun undoes it daily.
How we use it: in Medix Skin Brightening Serum (concentrated, for stubborn spots) and in Skin Xam Fairness Cream (with glutathione and niacinamide, for everyday use). Full guide: Alpha Arbutin Cream in Pakistan.
Best for: acne marks, sun spots, anyone who wants the strongest safe option for pigmentation.
Side by side
Strength on defined spots: Kojic ≈ Arbutin > Glutathione.
Overall tone and glow: Glutathione > Arbutin > Kojic.
Gentleness on sensitive / brown skin: Glutathione > Arbutin > Kojic.
Speed: all three need 6–8 weeks; kojic and arbutin show first on spots around week 4, glutathione shows first as overall freshness around week 3.
Stability: Arbutin and Glutathione are stable; pure Kojic Acid degrades — which is why the dipalmitate form is used in serious formulas.
Daily use: Glutathione and Arbutin yes; high-strength Kojic, every other night at most.
So which one should you buy?
"My whole face is dull and tanned after summer." Glutathione-led — Skin Xam Fairness Cream at night, Neoliva in the morning. Arbutin in the cream helps too.
"I have specific dark marks from acne." Arbutin-led — Medix Skin Brightening Serum on the marks at night. Add the Fairness Cream if the surrounding tone is also uneven.
"I have melasma / very stubborn patches." All three together, plus strict sunscreen, plus a dermatologist for anything prescription. Skin Xam Fairness Cream has all three; the serum on top for the patches.
"My skin is sensitive and reacts to everything." Glutathione first. Avoid high-strength kojic entirely. Introduce arbutin after 2 weeks if the skin is calm.
"I want the strongest thing." The strongest thing you can buy without a prescription is arbutin plus niacinamide plus daily SPF, used every single night for 8 weeks. Not a higher percentage of anything. Consistency beats concentration.
Why the blend beats the single ingredient
Pigment is made in several steps — the enzyme, the copper it needs, the type of melanin produced, the transfer of pigment into skin cells. Kojic hits one step, glutathione another, arbutin another, and niacinamide (which we haven't even covered — see Alpha Arbutin vs Niacinamide) blocks the transfer step. A cream that hits three or four steps at moderate levels beats a cream that hammers one step at a high, irritating level. That's not marketing; it's why every pharmaceutical brightening formula is a combination.
One rule that applies to all three
None of them work without sunscreen. Not a little less — not at all, in practice, because the sun makes new pigment faster than any cream removes the old. If you buy one product from this article, buy a sunscreen and use it daily. Then add the brightener.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better for dark spots: Kojic Acid, Glutathione or Alpha Arbutin?
For defined dark spots, Alpha Arbutin is the best balance of strength and safety; Kojic Acid is comparable but more irritating; Glutathione is better for overall tone than individual spots.
Is Kojic Acid safe for Pakistani skin?
In low, stable amounts inside a balanced formula, yes. High-strength pure kojic creams often irritate medium to deep skin tones and can cause new pigmentation. Avoid unlabelled kojic soaps and creams.
Can I use Kojic Acid, Glutathione and Alpha Arbutin together?
Yes — they work on different steps and combine well. Skin Xam Fairness Cream contains all three at balanced levels for daily night use.
Which ingredient works fastest?
None is fast. Kojic and arbutin show on spots around week 4; glutathione shows as overall brightness around week 3. Full results for all three take 6–8 weeks with daily sunscreen.
Is Glutathione cream better than Kojic Acid cream?
For sensitive skin and overall tone, yes. For a single stubborn spot, kojic or arbutin is more targeted. Most people do best with a blend.
Which is the best brightening cream in Pakistan with these ingredients?
Skin Xam Fairness Cream combines Glutathione, Alpha Arbutin, Kojic Acid Dipalmitate and Niacinamide, is steroid- and mercury-free and fully labelled. For concentrated spot treatment, Medix Skin Brightening Serum.
Do these ingredients change natural skin colour?
No. They fade tan, spots and dullness so your natural, even tone shows through. Nothing safe changes the colour you were born with.
Do I still need sunscreen with these creams?
Yes — every morning, without exception. Sun creates new pigment faster than any brightener removes it.
The short version
Kojic for stubborn spots if your skin can take it, glutathione for gentle overall brightening, arbutin for the best safe results on marks — and the smart move is a formula with more than one, used every night for 8 weeks under a daily sunscreen.
